Story

So where did it all begin?

Well, its 1997 and at 17 I get my first job as a trainee computer engineer. 12 Months of shipping out old school Wang components and I love it! My boss get's this new gizmo called a modem, 28.8kb and it had just been released. "Internet? Yeah I've heard about that."

I was in love! Personal spaces, creativity and a platform for endless forms of expression within the realms of your imagination and beyond.

"I'm gonna do this one day"
"Yeah, Yeah!".

The challenge was set! I got my first PC (a Pentium 100) and I was hooked. Building web pages using Netscape composer and paint! As time progressed, so did my experience and before long I had found my one true love, ASP.

Building sites with dynamic content and database driven gorgeousness, new realms of possibilities were opened before my very eyes. A few years later I'm offered a job in Huddersfield with a small design firm called Interactive Solutions. My skills are OK but not great and there's still a ton to learn.

4 years later I'm in charge of all disaster recovery procedures for all hosted web sites, I'm writing database schemas and building function libraries.

I move on to bigger challenges in the form of a law firm called Hammonds Direct. I quickly realise there's a great deal I don't know and my .net may as well be my .not. Within a short time I get into the groove of things, I read up on my VB.net, get down with C# and I learn from the people around me, progressing my skills even further. Functional programming is ditched for OOP. Reusable libraries are built to help port functionality to different mediums. I get to play around with web services, learn to create xsd's and xsl style sheets and get to work with developers from other organisations.

Flash, windows services, schema design and after 3 years a promotion to web team leader. I have a few guys on my team and we're a machine.

Next challenge, INK Digital Agency (or Ink Creations as they were back then). I get to delve into spots of design and am encouraged to experiment with new technologies. I get bitten with the JavaScript bug and when designing/developing Version 2 of the INK CMS - a healthy portion of JavaScript is used. My claim to fame and proudest dev moment to date is the LA Fitness Kiosk that is still used today. It always comes with a sense of pride that there’s a Kiosk in every location of one of the largest gym chains in the UK with software entirely created by me.

Many projects and a few years later I make another move to RentalCars.com in Manchester (which is where I find myself, now).
